I’m honored to have recently been named an New England Ocean Cluster Artist-in-Residence. I have several pieces hanging at the new NEOC Hus opening soon, including the monoprint TOIB Norwegian.
The Ocean is Black (TOIB) is part of Sanger Fra Mor, an ongoing visual essay referencing commercial fishing and the state on the ocean. The Ocean is Black comprises a series of monoprints each combining old and new technologies in multiple layers—computer editing, digital printing, and traditional printmaking methods. “The Ocean is Black” appears in different languages, across the bottom of each work, as an ironic reminder that all nations are culpable in the current ocean crisis.
In the monoprint TOIB Norwegian, the irony turns on itself. Norway, unlike many other countries, has invested their oil profits into resources to return their oceans blue.
