Torlen has been working in Maine, during the summer months for over 25 years. In the past 20 years he has worked on Monhegan Island where he paints watercolors in the open air and develops narrative works.
Selected watercolor/gouache paintings of Monhegan Island were exhibited in Rockland, Maine during September, 2017 at Jonathan Frost Gallery, in a group exhibition titled I Cover the Waterfront. His Monhegan works were also included in the Monhegan Quadricentennial Contemporary Exhibition at the Monhegan House, and in the exhibition, The Unfailing Muse, Monhegan at the Archipelago Gallery in Rockland, Maine during July and August, 2014.
